Understanding Energy-Efficient Solutions

Windows have evolved from mere openings in walls to integral components that enhance comfort and energy efficiency in modern homes. While they cover a small percentage of the total wall area, windows can account for a significant amount of energy loss, leading to higher costs for homeowners.

Let’s explore how energy-efficient windows can transform your home’s environment and reduce your energy expenses.

The Importance of Energy-Efficient Windows

Energy-efficient windows offer multiple benefits beyond just keeping the weather elements at bay. They can:

Improve Comfort and Reduce Drafts

Good windows eliminate drafts, ensuring a more comfortable living environment for you and your family.

Provide Noise Reduction

Energy-efficient windows block exterior noise, creating a peaceful ambiance inside your home.

Preserve Your Furnishings

They offer fade protection to your carpeting and furnishings, extending their appearance and longevity.

Enhance Home Value

Investing in energy-efficient windows can increase the value of your home, making it an appealing choice for potential buyers.

Understanding Window Components

Energy-efficient windows consist of three vital parts: glazing or glass, edge spacers, and frames. Each component plays a crucial role in your home’s overall comfort and energy conservation.

Glazing or Glass

  • Single-paned windows provide little insulation, while two or three panes offer improved energy efficiency.
  • Low-E glass uses a colorless, invisible coating to reflect heat, making double-paned windows as effective as triple-paned ones.
  • Heat Mirror™ technology suspends a thin, clear, polyester film with low-E coating between two panes of glass for even greater energy efficiency.
  • Some windows have krypton or argon gas between the panes, which reduces heat transfer more effectively than air.

Edge Spacers

  • Older windows used aluminum edge spacers that conduct heat rapidly. Modern windows use materials like structural foam, slowing down heat transfer and boosting energy efficiency.

Frames

  • Metal frames conduct heat quickly, but those with thermal breaks (plastic inserts separating the inside metal from the outside) conserve energy.
  • Wood frames conduct heat slowly, but they require more maintenance. Some wood windows are available with metal cladding to reduce the need for painting.
  • Vinyl frames provide efficiency comparable to wood and require less upkeep.

Choosing the Right Windows

When selecting new windows, consider factors like your budget and window orientation. Look for U-values displayed on windows, measuring the entire window unit’s efficiency.

Lower U-values mean less heat transfer between indoor and outdoor air, resulting in better energy conservation. Shading Coefficient (SC) and Air Filtration (AF) are other measures of window energy efficiency to consider.

Proper Installation is Key

Even the most energy-efficient window requires proper installation for optimal performance. Weatherizing and insulating windows during installation is essential, and qualified installers can ensure your windows perform to their full potential.

We are so happy with our new windows. This is our second install with Western Windows this year (patio door last spring and windows in our master bedroom this fall). The process from the beginning to the end - top notch. Excellent service and quality of workmanship. Great team- Joe, Darin and crews. I also appreciate the time taken and care in putting the window trim back on and absolutely no mess afterward. I look forward to working with Western Windows for the rest of our window replacements.

I have had such great experiences with this company (3 times) that I would not go anywhere else for windows. The staff are always polite. The salesman (Joe) had previously been part of the team installing windows in my house. The quality of the windows are impressive - I have been adding triple pane glass. The installation is precise. They even removed my inside trim and reattached it without any damage! There was absolutely no mess at all left for me to clean up. The outside looks like it has never been disturbed. I can absolutely recommend this company without any hesitation!
